Gray Blouse & Statement Necklace | Shades of SarahFringe Crossbody Bag | Shades of SarahI’ve been blogging about my favorite clothes for 7 years now, and it’s taught me a few things about my personal style. I love a good graphic tee. My favorite outfit formula is black and a pop of color. Lipstick can take a dress the next level. One thing I don’t really play around with? Monochrome. So I was surprised this mostly gray outfit felt very me.

This outfit came together on accident. I was originally looking for my black jeans, but I couldn’t find them in the black hole that is my wardrobe. So instead I just grabbed these and went for it. Well surprise, I liked it! Sometimes, it’s just best to keep it simple. It wasn’t until after I took these photos that I realized this is a gray knockoff of an all-black outfit Priya wore last summer — down to the statement necklace and clogs! I think the key to monochrome outfits is different textures and adding a colorful accessory for contrast. Turns out, that’s the same formula I used last time I blogged a monochrome outfit.

This weekend it felt almost fall-like, and I am not ready for that. I haven’t gone swimming nearly enough times, but it is nice to be able to wear jeans more often. I will not bend and do any fall shopping…yet.

Know Me Like The Summer

How to wear a corduroy skirt in summer | Shades of SarahLet me tell you about the only unicorn I believe in: the perfect 70 degrees and sunny summer day. It’s important to take advantage of these rare days, so do as I do: eat brunch outside with your dog and wear your corduroy button skirt.

I received this skirt from Tobi in the fall, and knew it’d be the perfect cold weather skirt. It’s super cute with a long cardigan or with tights and ankle boots. Even in skirt form, corduroy isn’t that wearable in the summer (hello, humidity), so it’s best to keep it simple: a red tank with lace trim makes the black pop. Flats and a woven bag in contrasting prints keep it from being too basic.

Not every item of clothing is going to work for all four seasons, but it’s fun to try to make it work.

Black, Gold & Peplum

Black Laser Cut Peplum with JeansWhen it comes to trends, what goes around comes around right? I first bought this top a few years ago — the last time peplum blouses and skirts were trendy. I’m glad I kept it around after the trend passed. The new ones are a little more relaxed, but mine is black (timeless) and eyelet (another spring trend), so it fits right in.
Black Laser Cut Peplum
Black Laser Cut Peplum with JeansTo brighten things up a bit, I added my favorite (and only) MAC lipstick — Como La Flor, from the Selena collection (though this bright red is similar). I grabbed my mirrored sunglasses — they’re a lot, but the rest of the look is simple so I think it works.
Black Laser Cut Peplum with JeansI’m also very into my strappy block heel sandals. I originally bought them for a wedding, but they ended up being too dressy (it was picnic-themed, and I embraced the laid-back vibe). I haven’t worn them for an extended period of time, but so far, so good on the comfort level.

Any other spring trends you’re glad are back (or still) in our closets? I love the seventies vibes right now, but I don’t reach for my flared jeans nearly enough. In the meantime, here are some more peplums with potential (under $50 of course!).
