Soul Food & Girl Talk

Harlem Restaurant Week, along with midterm week on the horizon, called for a roomie date splurging on some soul food. My roommate Jillian and I hit up Harlem for a $20 3-course lunch last Friday, and it was glorious. It was nice to take an afternoon to try some different food (I’m obviously way adventurous) and explore a new New York neighborhood.

Now onto the food…

I am not a wing person – I don’t really like eating meat of the bone, and I don’t like hot sauces. These, however, were tender and delicious.

I remember when I first heard about chicken & waffles when I read some YA book (Princess & the Pauper, for those of you wondering) and I’ve been curious to try the unexpected (at least me) combination ever since! It’s actually delicious – and really filling!

And no pictures of the peach cobbler and banana pudding we ordered for dessert, because hello, it was dessert. And some other Harlem snapshots:

I loved the detail on this corner building on 125th, I wonder what it was before it was a Starbucks and a bank.

I just can’t with the buildings in this area – the architecture is so homey.

This mosaic at the 125th subway station is awesome.

And as for what I wore?

Coat – Esprit; Chambray – Old Navy; Sweater – JC Penney; Jeggings – TJ Maxx; Booties – Charlotte Russe.

First, I don’t know how you fancy outdoor-photo-taking bloggers do it in the winter. I was cold! But it gave me a chance to keep my coat on, which I adore. It’s plum, hooded, and zips up nicely. I also attempted layering my new chambray underneath a sweater for the first time. I don’t think I’ve mastered it yet, but it definitely kept me warm. And I would wear chambray to Clare’s neighborhood just when she has to give it up for her chambray challenge. Good luck, Clare!

I also have been dying to wear my new Western booties out, but there’s been too much slush on the ground. I don’t even care that you can see my socks. Expect to see these a lot more come springtime!

I never know how to start my first blog post after a long hiatus. Do I even acknowledge it at all? I did want to say (write) that I miss when my blog was a daily part of my life, back when I started it after my freshman year of college. (What.) During the last two years of school, life has just gotten in the way, which is fine. That’s the point.

It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a blogging break. That’s a little weird to say considering I only updated seven times all of the fall semester. And that was when I squeezed in blogging whenever I could. Taking a real purposeful break though? I don’t even remember when that was. And that was January for me.

Now it’s February, a new month, a new leaf – how is 2013 already flying by?! 2013 is a big year – well, as my boyfriend reminded me around New Year’s, every year is a big year – but this time I know I’m heading towards a turning point: graduation. Nothing to get into now, but it’s certainly on my mind between now and May (!).

Anyway, now to the outfit. This post is also a return to the chambray shirt. If you frequently ready fashion blogs, I know you’ve seen a hundred variations of this look by now. There’s a reason for that though – it works. And with my old chambray button-down (last seen here) not cutting it, I knew it was time for a new one.

I don’t frequent Old Navy much, but it is one of the few places I online shop. (That’s a maybe once a year, and I totally fell for their free shipping gimmick and I ended up purchasing $26 worth of extra stuff to save $7 on shipping. Whoops.) I’m always a size medium in their clothes, and one of my closet staples – my trench coat – is from there.I knew it was the perfect place to look for my new chambray – more relaxed, in a darker wash and with sleeve tabs. So thank you, Old Navy.

Statement necklaces are also big right now (pun not intended). This one, with painted wooden beads, has a colorful, bohemian vibe (and it’s adjustable, win). And what can I say about these pants, other than they’re fabulous and I love them? I love them. I hope they last forever (or as long as I fit into them).

Happy 2013 (almost)! I know a lot of blogs do style retrospectives, so I thought I’d post some of my favorite outfits of 2012 (though I didn’t have too many photos to pick from!). It’s especially fun to compare what I wore to my style resolutions for 2012 – I didn’t always keep them in mind, but I think I followed through with some of them anyway.

I wore this for an internship interview and just love the individual pieces – this chiffon-like printed top, the silk pencil skirt, the watch, the pumps. Yes, please.

Independence Day

My 4th of July outfit! And summer tan! Again, I like all the classic pieces, especially my sunhat, and I think it was a fun playful look for the holiday. All I needed was a pool to lounge by.

Tie-Dye Blues

The most colorful look of the bunch! If I didn’t have this blog, I’m not even sure this is something I would’ve worn! But I think I’ve grown in confidence – at least when it comes to my wardrobe.

I love this thrifted dress, and I’m glad I was able to find a way to wear it in slightly cooler weather. I think I may need to shop for a new chambray button-down though.

Election

Mostly because my red cords are one of the favorite new pieces in my closet. I’m wearing them now actually! Also leopard and another thrifted piece, my blouse. Love (and super comfy).

Happy New Year! I’ll be celebrating in Disney World Epcot tomorrow – we decided to take a last-minute road trip up to Orlando for the holiday. What does everyone else have planned? Any fabulous sequined outfits?
