Time To Pretend

Whoa! Two posts in one day? Yes, but don’t get too excited. This is just a quick post and my first attempt at an outfit post. I’ve been thinking of doing these for a bit, since I always get such positive feedback on my fashion posts. Today I got compliments on my outfit and was feeling lazy so I figured, why not start now? Honestly though, I don’t know how you fashion bloggers do it. Serious props. Taking your own pictures (especially with a webcam) is super awkward and I couldn’t help but feel self-conscious.

Moving on…

Today was very wet and windy and overall miserable Monday in the city. That being said, I need to wear something comfortable but still practical for the elements. This may just be my  new go-to rainy day outfit. (Please excuse the mess, it’s not even my side of the room, promise!)

Pink Top with Zipper Embellishment- JcPenny; Denim Shorts- Thrifted; Striped Glitter Tights- Target; Pink and Black Rainboots- JcPenny; Hair- Frizzy.

I had a pretty busy day, but nothing too overwhelming. Then again I’m blogging to procrastinate my homework, so that may change. I had two classes in the late morning and then had a chance to relax in the afternoon before working at our campus television station.

In the evening, I watched a screening of the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary The Two Escobars. It was absolutely incredible, and very emotional for me. The film discusses the lives of the drug lord Pablo Escobar and Colombian soccer superstar Andrés Escobar. Both men were from the city of Medellín, and their lives were intertwined in a way that’s hard to explain. You learn more about the film here.

Tomorrow is kind of a longer day, and it starts at 8:30 in the morning. The good thing is that I’ll be in the classes I look forward to. The bad news is that I’ll be on a media fast. It’s an assignment for my intro to comm class. Yeah, we’ll see how well a college-aged blogger fares without texting, e-mail, Twitter, or Facebook for a day. Do you guys think I can do it?

Fashion Inspiration: Thelma & Louise

Yesterday afternoon, I sat down with my mom to watch one of her all-time favorite movies, Thelma & Louise. It’s a 1990s classic, so it may seem like an odd movie to by inspired by when it comes to fashion. After all, most of the movie takes place in the Southwest and there’s plenty of double denim. Still, with a few fresh updates looks inspired by these two broads are perfect for the dog days of summer.

Look #1: Thelma

Thelma & Louise: Thelma

Chambray Shirt- Old Navy; Floral Cross-Body Bag- Topshop; Embroidered Dress- Forever 21 (Canada); Cat-Eye Sunglasses- Urban Outfitters; Cowboy Boots- Forever 21 (Canada)

This look was inspired by Thelma, played by Geena Davis. At the start of the movie, Thelma is flighty and flirty, and this breezy white dress captures that carefree vibe. Layer over it a chic (unbuttoned) chambray shirt, a revived 90’s fashion staple. The floral bag is kitschy addition to the outfit. The girly cat-eyes with tinted pink lenses add another pop of color. Cowboy boots complete the look- Thelma is a country girl! The ankle length and studs keep the boots modern and not costume-y. If you need more convincing, remember summer boots are worth trying out!

Look #2: Louise

Thelma & Louise: Louise

Straw Fedora- Tilly’s; Turquoise Necklace- Fred Flare; Racerback Tank- Old Navy; Shorts- Forever 21; Satchel- Topshop; Cowboy Boots- Forever 21 (Canada)

Susan Sarandon plays Louise, the antithesis of Thelma: strong, sassy, and stubborn. This look reflects the tough girl vibe Louise gives off. The foundation for the outfit is your basic white tank and cutoffs, plus a satchel for any essentials. The necklace does double-duty as a statement piece with a Western flair. Although Louise wears a cowboy hat throughout the movie, a trendy straw fedora is more wearable. I picked the same boots as the ones in the Thelma outfit (she and Louise are best friends!) but in brown to go better with the overall look.

What do you think? Have you seen Thelma & Louise? Would you wear similar outfits to these? Let me know!

P.S. Sorry about the lack of decent movie stills. Google Images was not helping.

Fashion Inspiration: Wizards of Waverly Place

Before I begin this post, I’d just like to thank you guys for all your feedback on my first Fashion Inspiration post. I’m actually really self-conscious about the stuff I post, so it was great getting lots of positive feedback! I hope you like my follow-up.

I’ll admit it: on occasion, I still watch Disney Channel. I’m not even part of their main demographics anymore, but I love Sonny with a Chance and of course, Wizards of Waverly Place. The show is about a family of wizards living in downtown Manhattan. (Does anyone else harbor a secret crush on David Henrie? Or is that just me?) Selena Gomez (who I kind of adore) plays Alex Russo, the spunky and sassy troublemaking witch. I think Alex is a fun character for kids because she’s a regular kid, and she’s a slacker, not Little Miss Perfect. Plus, she has a great sense of style.

There are many components to Alex’s outfits. Throughout the series, her fashion has evolved from kind of urban-punk to more polished but still fun and unique. Alex is a huge fan of color, and lots of it. Rarely do we see her wearing something monochromatic. Alex uses layers with ease and she mixes prints like a pro. She tends to wear skinny jeans or tights tucked into boots (where she hides her wands)- she’s not a ballet flat kind of girl. Alex also uses jewelry and accessories like scarves, belts, and vests to add more dimensions to her outfits. Basically, it’s nothing at all like what I wear, but I still love her clothing. So I tried to put together a few outfits that Alex would love (I hope)- colorful, wild, but wearable.

Outfit #1

Wizards of Waverly Place- Alex #1

Asian Print Henley- Lucky; Cami- Vanity; Vest- Forever 21 (Canada); Skinny Jeans- Coggles; Earrings- Amazon; Converse- Journeys.

I started this outfit with a great henley (you can take a closer look at the print here). I layered a black cami over it because a) it’s a neutral so it won’t look too busy and b) it makes the print pop even more. Someone who is more adventurous might try the flowy vest (which I love) instead, so I included that look as well. I added the earrings because Alex loves her accessories. The red converse complete the outfit with another pop of color

Outfit #2

Wizards of Waverly Place- Alex #2

Gray Henley- Witchery.com; NYC Heart Tank- Deliah’s; Skinny Jeans- Deliah’s; Crochet Beret- Forever 21; Suede Boots- Amazon.

Not only does Alex love skinnies, she often goes for colored bottoms. Maybe it’s the artist in her. I picked these deep yellow jeans because the color is similar to the gold glitter heart featured in the tank top. The gray henley works under the New York tank because it adds layers without adding a competing color or print. For the boots, I picked this colorful, slouchy pair- you need confidence to wear them, so they definitely give off a “cool kid” vibe. The beret adds an artsy, bohemian vibe.

Outfit #3

Wizards of Waverly Place- Alex #3

Fleece Hoodie- Old Navy; Dress- Forever 21; Pink Peace Sign Scarf- Buckle; Tights- Bella Deco; Boots- Deb Shops

Alex does have a girly side, so that’s why I picked a dress for the last look. The dress itself is pretty interesting- it’s a tank dress in a fun floral print with an imitation sweetheart neckline. (At least according to me.) I picked gray patterned tights and gray booties, to give the dress a tough but sweet spin. A pink print scarf and a purple hoodie add layers and color to complete the outfit.

So what do you think? Do you watch Wizards of Waverly Place? Did these outfits capture Alex’s look? Would you wear any of these looks? (I know I’m thinking of incorporating some of this into my back-to-school shopping.) Let me know in the comments!
